Hospice of Virginia stepped in to support our family as we faced the inevitable in Jackie’s journey. At that stage, treatment was no longer an option, and their guidance helped us navigate the difficult road ahead with care and understanding. It was a reality I had never faced before—every previous battle with cancer had ended in remission, making this outcome all the more difficult to accept. Stunned into silence, I sat on FaceTime with my sister, struggling to process the moment as she fought to let a tear fall. Her tear ducts had long dried, and it had been a while since I last saw a tear trace its path down her face.
These are just some of the profound changes that come with fighting a battle against cancer—a journey that reshapes lives in ways few can fully understand. I searched for the right words of encouragement, but in that moment, I found myself grappling with a sense of uncertainty, struggling to truly comprehend the weight of it all. She expressed her wish to spend her final months here in Virginia, hoping to be surrounded by familiar love and comfort in her remaining days.
When we purchased this home in 2016, my hope was for it to be a sanctuary—a place filled with joy, connection, and togetherness. This home would now serve as a place of comfort for my sister in her final days and a space of remembrance that I will carry with me forever. Hospice provides support for families facing similar difficult journeys, offering comfort and care during life’s most challenging moments. They offer free medication, comfort, guidance, and unwavering support to every family member, ensuring no one faces the journey alone. Before experiencing hospice care firsthand, I knew little about the vital support they provide. Now, I am committed to sharing resources that can help other families prepare for the realities of facing similar circumstances, ensuring they have the guidance and understanding they need.
A nurse visited our home each week to monitor my sister’s medication and ensure her pain was carefully managed at all times. As time passed, Jackie’s memory began to fade, and in her final days, she could no longer administer her own medication. There were moments when Jackie grew frustrated, struggling to determine which medication she needed to take. Doctor’s appointments often heightened her agitation, and if she missed a dose, the pain became unbearable. Jackie was resilient and rarely voiced her pain, but I could see the weight of it in her eyes.
At just 35, Jackie’s body endured hardships that often remained unseen. One of those challenges was Shingles—a viral infection known for causing a painful rash. Shingles can develop on any part of the body, but in Jackie’s case, the painful rash surfaced on her thighs and lower legs. She often spoke about the relentless burning sensations that disrupted her sleep, making nights especially difficult to endure. Shingles typically affects older individuals with weakened immune systems, making it harder for their bodies to fight off the infection quickly. Even in her final months, Jackie displayed remarkable strength, enduring hardships that would have overwhelmed most—her resilience was nothing short of that of a warrior.
Jackie wasn’t particularly keen on following the dietary plan set by the hospice team. When they weren’t watching, she would sneak in indulgences, opting for comfort over prescribed nutrition. Jackie never protested the exercises prescribed during physical therapy, faithfully completing each session. However, beyond those guided routines, she lacked the energy to engage in additional exercises on her own. She often described the sensation as if the wind were constantly being knocked out of her, leaving her breathless and drained. As her condition worsened, she was placed on a breathing machine to help maintain her oxygen levels, providing the support her body desperately needed. As my sister's caregiver, witnessing her decline was a heartbreaking reality. Yet, hospice offered a depth of understanding and support that we wouldn’t have had otherwise, helping us navigate each step of the journey.
The team would visit to pray with the family, offering a comforting presence. As someone deeply spiritual, these moments were essential for my understanding and sense of closure. Though my sister wasn’t one to regularly attend church, she deeply valued the unwavering support from the hospice team, finding particular comfort in the chaplain’s presence. She frequently sought the chaplain’s presence, asking to be anointed and prayed over, finding solace in those moments of spiritual connection. She continued to speak until the very end of her journey—a gift not everyone is granted. I was profoundly grateful for those moments, as they became a source of comfort when I needed them most. My frustration ran high, yet the hospice team’s reassuring smiles felt well-earned, offering a sense of calm amidst the storm I have deep trust in our hospice team here in Virginia, and I hope this post brings comfort to those facing their own difficult journeys.
